What's Happening in the West Village

With so many different groups located throughout the West Village, there is always something going on.
The LGBT Community Center will be holding several events, including a burlesque show at the Stonewall at 53 Christopher St. Oct. 11; a free Erotic Film and Literature Sale at the LGBT Community Center at 208 W 13th St. on Sept. 27; a play reading by Megan Cossey and a homoerotic art expose on Oct. 3 featuring lectures the artists being displayed.
The LGBT Community Board will also be holding several political events including a meet the candidates event on Oct 7. for the Manhattan State Senate and Assembly Candidates, as well as showing the presidential debate. They will also hold a presidential forum moderated by Associate Editor of the Nation, Richard Kim on Oct 2.
In music news, the Melissa Stylianou Quartet and Sweet Georgia Brown and the Blues Crusaders will be playing at Bar 55. Also playing there will be Marko Marcinko Latin Jazz Quintet, Sept. 28; the Beaty Brothers, Oct. 2; and Wayne Krantz later that same night.
At Cielo, another hot night spot, Freedom will be playing with Junior Vazquez on Sept. 28. Also playing will be Vibal on Oct. 4
S.O.B.’s, will be ‘Talento Brazil’ will be playing Sept. 28 as well as R&B star Raphael Saadiq, Sept. 30. and Orlando Valle Maraca Oct. 1.
Steve Earl will also be playing at the Judson Memorial Church located at 55 Washington Square South from Sept. 21 to Sept. 26, citing a connection with the Village as the reason to hold the show.
In city news, Senator Jeff Klein continues to push the city’s Health Department to create a grading system for the sanitary conditions of restaurants. The system would use letter grades from A to F, having drastic affect on the area. Certain restaurants have already been closed down for sanitary reasons such as Guacamole’x and Mamoun’s Falafel. This move would only further business problems for these restaurants.
In local news, Grace Bergere, the 12-year-old girl survived a fall down a 14 story chimney, reformed “Deep River” with her mother at the Westbeth music festival on Sept. 21. Still in a back brace, Bergere was quoted saying, “"I'm pretty much recovered." And that’s what’s happening in the West Village.
